Job Description

This position is responsible for the administration and performance of the Machine Shop activities. General duties within the Machine Shop include: administration of company policies; employee training; quality and continuous improvement of department operations and processes; establishing departmental objectives and plans in accordance with company goals; and implementation of departmental plans. Actively ensures compliance to current Good Manufacturing Practices, Safety and Environmental regulations while achieving operational cost goals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage all machine shop operations and personnel, either directly or through subordinates;

• Develop and accomplish department goals for Safety, Quality, Delivery, Productivity, Cost and

Inventory that meet or exceed company’s goals and objectives;

• Responsible for maintaining and executing production schedules and quality standards for each

machine shop work center;

• Responsible for overseeing the origination and maintenance of machine shop travelers and

Mastercam CNC programs;

• Assign work, delegate duties, and oversee training and development of Machine Shop personnel;

• Develop and maintain personnel requirements for department based on current and projected

production needs;

• Identify and conduct continuous improvement Kaizen events/projects to reduce cost and waste

from Machine Shop processes;

• Develop and implement automation and lights-out machining projects to achieve quality and cost

reduction objectives;

• Advise top management on new production and inspection technologies;

• Assist with the evaluation, planning, installation, training and start up of new equipment for the

machine shop;

• Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable

laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, directing work,

appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and

resolving problems;

• Assist workers in trouble shooting set-up, production and quality issues;

• Assist workers in diagnosing malfunctions in machinery and equipment;

• Maintain and upgrade, as necessary, through support personnel, all tooling, machinery,

computers, and software used by department;

• Interact with other departments as necessary on document changes, new product design activities,

product improvements, and various other support issues;

• Plan, administer and maintain procedures and work instructions for primary activities within

department in accordance with company’s ISO 9001/AS9100 Quality Management System;

• Reduce operation costs and manage department expense budget;

• Ability to react to changes productively and perform other essential tasks as assigned;

• Conduct himself/herself in a professional and courteous manner.

Job Requirements

• Applicant must be ITAR compliant;

• Superior knowledge of all Machine Shop operations and processes;

• Ability to set-up and operate safely and proficiently a variety of machinery and equipment,

including CNC lathes and mills, punch presses, drill presses, grinders and deburring equipment;

• Ability to interpret complex part drawings, perform standard shop computations relating to part

dimensions, tooling, speeds and feeds, and recommend optimum machining methods;

• Proficient knowledge of precision mechanical inspection processes and equipment, including

calipers, micrometers, height gages, thread and plug gages, optical comparators, bore scopes and


• Proficient knowledge of standard shop practices and aerospace quality standards, including

drawing tolerances, First Articles, part finishes and burrs;

• Working knowledge of Mastercam or equivalent programming software;

• Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing / Six Sigma principles, including SPC;

• Ability to set and achieve goals, motivate and direct subordinates;

• Effective time management skills;

• Computer Skills: Proficiency with M/S Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and other office

computer software;

• Ability to work well with only a modest amount of repeated instructions;

• Be team oriented and possess flexibility and adaptability;

• Working consistently and working overtime occasionally;

• Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner;

• Minimum ten years of related experience, including at least four years in a supervisor/manager
